JEWELRY

What is the difference between gold plated vs 14k gold filled?

If you are confused about the difference between gold filled and gold plated you are not alone. Gold plated jewelry is a low-end metal electroplated with a thin layer of gold. It is cheap using copper or nickel underneath the thin layer of gold. This is the least expensive and the gold starts to wear off quite quickly. Gold filled is the highest quality of the non-solid options, having a higher percentage of gold per piece than the other options. By law, gold filled is required to be at least 5% gold by weight, hence the layer of gold is much thicker than in gold plated.

Will my jewelry tarnish? And what is the best practice for storing my jewelry to keep it looking new?

All sterling silver is vulnerable to tarnish, but there are some easy things you can do to protect your jewelry and keep it bright for longer. The first and best thing, is to wear it. The gentle abrasion from regular wear keeps your silver burnished, clean and bright. The next best thing is to keep it stored in a small plastic bag when you are not wearing it. Every order will come with a small jewelry zip top baggie you can use for this proper care.

What is the best way to polish my jewelry if it does get tarnished?

There are lot of products out there to help you polish your jewelry. No matter what silver polish you use, including polishing cloths, be sure to rinse your jewelry with gentle soap and water and then dry thoroughly before wearing or putting away.

Will this work on my gold filled jewelry?

Yes. Use the same process on your gold filled jewelry to restore and shine.

Can I wear them if I have an allergy to mixed metals?

One of the primary causes for allergic reactions in jewelry is due to the inclusion of nickel and lead which is used to make jewelry. Gold-filled is not to be confused with gold-plated which has a reputation for chipping, gold-filled jewelry is hypo-allergenic and is required to be 5% or more of gold by weight (gold plating is only 0.05% typically!).Sterling silver is also hypo-allergenic making it perfect for jewelry such as earrings.
